About Us
Wonyee Tom was born and raised in New York, where she began her career. Her first job after culinary school was at Chelsea Baking Company – making breakfast pastries on the graveyard shift. She has come a long way, criss-crossing the US to work at some of the country’s top restaurants and hotels. She honed her skills at the Biltmore Santa Barbara, Aquavit, Restaurant Sofi and The Pierre Hotel. As the Pastry Chef at Gotham Bar and Grill in New York and The Water Grill in downtown Los Angeles, her specialty was putting a new spin on traditional desserts – making them all her own.
In 2005, Wonyee decided to start her own business in her adopted hometown of Huntington Beach. After playing around with different names, there was an “aha” moment - thus the birth of Tomgirl Baking Company. Why Tomgirl? Wonyee hails from a family of six girls (yes six, no boys). While some of the “Tomgirls” live in New York and some in California, all of the girls have taken a turn at the bakery.
Her sister Lisa spent many weekends helping out. After all, what are sisters for? Lisa enjoyed it so much, she joined Tomgirl Baking Company full-time. While Wonyee is baking and managing the kitchen, Lisa is working with clients.
